Frequently Asked Questions for LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) & ESL (English as a Second Language) Adult non-credit Programs

I want to join a LINC or ESL class, but I need a language assessment or to be retested.  How can I schedule a Language Assessment Test?

  • Our classes are currently closed, however the testing centres have now reinstated language assessments online.   Call the Assessment Centre directly for information on scheduling an assessment at 1 855-330-8655. 

I was in another organization LINC or ESL program, but want to join your program in September.  How can I transfer to your school?

  •  If you were attending similar classes elsewhere in Ontario, your assessment should still be valid.  Check our website in August for updates on course information and registration.

I was in your LINC or ESL program a while ago, but I had to leave.  I want to join language classes again in September 2020. What should I do?

  • Call the Assessment Centre at 1 855-330-8655 to check that your previous assessment is still valid.  If it is you can register for classes in September once registration opens.  If your assessment is no longer valid you will need to schedule a new language assessment.

I have questions about the distance learning class I took between March and June 2020 but I don't know how to contact my teacher.  Who can I call?

  • All instructors are on vacation at this time and will not be able to answer your questions.  Please call 289-481-1336 and Cathy will pass your message on to your teacher, who can get back to you in September 2020.

When can I register for ESL Summer School?

  • Unfortunately we are unable to offer Summer non-credit ESL classes for 2020.

Will LINC & ESL classes be distance learning or in person in September 2020?

  • Unfortunately we do not know if classes will be in person, distance or a combination of both in September 2020. Please visit this site regularly for updates.  The Ministry of Education and Durham Region Health along with DCDSB will determine the learning model in the upcoming weeks.

I need my Language Proficiency Certificate but your office is closed.  How can I get a copy of my certificate?

  • Our Language Offices in Whitby, Ajax Welcome Centre and Ajax Continuing Education are closed. Please call Cathy at the Language Office at 289-481-1336 for more information.

I was registered to attend the Citizenship Preparation class in April; however, it was cancelled.  When can I register for the next class?

  • Unfortunately we are not scheduling the Citizenship Preparation class at this time.  For information on how you can prepare for the Citizenship Test on your own, here are a few websites:
