This summer, students in the Leadership and Recreation and Deconstructing Anti-Black Racism courses demonstrated exceptional leadership, insight, and community engagement — both inside and outside the classroom.
In the Leadership and Recreation course that was offered from July 2 - August 8, 2025 through
Archbishop Anthony Meagher Catholic Continuing Education Centre, Black students and allies organized inclusive multi-sport events including basketball, soccer, track and field, and volleyball for younger peers. These events nurtured peer relationships, mentorship and built a stronger sense of community across grade levels, showcasing the students’ commitment to leadership and inclusivity.
Meanwhile, the Deconstructing Anti-Black Racism course offered a powerful platform for students to explore themes of Black excellence, systemic racism, and equity. Through critical discussions and texts like Delays of Dreams from the Ontario Human Rights Commission, students examined the impact of systemic barriers on Black youth in education. Topics such as the Jim Crow era, microaggressions, and colourism resonated deeply, sparking personal reflection and dialogue within the school community.
A standout moment was the class’s visit to York University. Students met with Dr. Carl James, a renowned scholar and advocate whose work has transformed support systems for Black students in Canada. Dr. James generously donated $1,000 to a Grade 11 student entering Grade 12 who exemplified leadership and academic excellence, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.
Inspired by this initiative, several organizations and individuals joined in support:
- Academic Allies donated $1,000, continuing their mission to mentor and empower underserved Black youth.
- The Durham Catholic District School Board (DCDSB) contributed $1,000.
- Principal Chris Cuddy of Archbishop Anthony Meagher Catholic Continuing Education Centre added another $1,000.
- Jamaal Magloire, former NBA All-Star, donated $600, which was awarded to six students through a raffle draw.
To celebrate their accomplishments throughout the school year, students and their families were invited to attend a year-end celebration on Friday, August 8, 2025, at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School. Special guest Jamaal Magloire joined the celebration. He gave an inspiring and motivational speech, emphasizing the importance of education, hard work, respecting parents, and dreaming big.
The year-end celebration was emotional and unforgettable. Students shared heartfelt reflections surrounded by their families and peers. Their courage, leadership, and advocacy are a testament to the power of education and community.
Thank you to all the DCDSB educators and staff involved, especially Mr. Washington and Mr. Bonesteel, for creating safe and welcoming spaces, as well as memorable experiences for all students.
