REGISTRATION for ESL classes is now OPEN!

NEW CLASSES BEGIN ON SEPTEMBER 14, 2026.

• Eligible Newcomers with a valid Language Assessment are invited to complete a Registration Request Form.
• This does not guarantee a seat in a class. All eligible students will be placed on a waiting list and will be contacted WHEN a seat is available.
• All classes will have an Employment Focus and are for newcomers who are looking to improve their English skills for employment.

Before joining a class, all students must provide proof of current Immigration Status, to be eligible to attend.

Eligibility

Who is eligible for free ESL classes*?

Our classes are free if you are a:

• Permanent Resident
• Refugee Claimant
• Live-In Caregiver Program participant
• Canadian Citizens born outside of Canada
• Convention Refugees/Protected Persons
• Persons who have a letter of initial approval of permanent residence from Citizenship and Immigration Canada
• Foreign domestic workers admitted under the Live-In Caregiver program
• Provincial nominees, or their dependents, who have been approved through the Opportunities Ontario Provincial Nominee Program but have not yet been processed to receive permanent resident status

Important Information

Read the class schedule BEFORE you complete the Registration Request Form to ensure you are registering for a class WE ARE OFFERING. Not all levels will be offered at all times, and at all locations.

Due to high demand students are asked to register for only 1 day class (morning or afternoon) as we have long waiting lists. Students MUST be able to attend 100% of the time as we will be enforcing our attendance policy. We do not have part-time day classes. All classes are 5 days/week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday AND Friday.

Please check the school locations below for a list of which classes are available BEFORE you complete the Registration Form.

Attendance Policy

• students must to be able to attend class 100% of the time, attending all classes during the scheduled time
• students cannot take time off for any reason and risk being removed from the class if the Attendance Policy is not met
• students who only want to attend part-time classes or need a flexible schedule are asked to contact the ACHEV Assessment Centre for a list of schools at 1-855-330-8655.

Locations & Classes Offered:

Ajax Continuing Education - 458 Fairall Street, Ajax ON

The school is located inside Archbishop Anthony Meagher Continuing Education Department, at the north-east corner of Fairall Street and Westney Road.

Whitby Language Centre - 1003 Giffard Street, Whitby, ON 

The school is located near the corner of Dundas Street (Highway 2) and Cochrane Street in Whitby, on Giffard Street between St John the Evangelist Church and St John the Evangelist Elementary School. Enter the church parking lot and you will see the school on the right side.

ONLINE NIGHT 

Night classes will begin in late October 2026.  Classes will be held on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00pm-8:45pm.  This is an ONLINE/HYBRID course. Students must be able to participate at night during the scheduled times and attend an IN_PERSON class at the Ajax Welcome Centre location, one night each month. Priority given to residents of Durham as it is mandatory to come in to see the teacher at various times. YOU MUST HAVE A COMPUTER OR LAPTOP TO JOIN THIS ONLINE CLASS. This class ends at 8:30pm. Teacher available from 8:30-8:45pm each day for binder support. This course will focus on Employment English skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading & Writing. Skills are developed through interactive exercises & communicative learning improving vocabulary and pronunciation skills. Students will achieve their goals by being able to demonstrate the ability to read, interpret, and get information from general formatted and informational text.

Our ESL classes are dependent on Provincial funding from the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD).
