The Math Behind Cooking and Baking

It’s often said that baking is a science, but one may argue that its more about Math. Now I’ve baked my fair share of cupcakes and have experience both success and failure. However, what I do know is that Math is used in every step of baking and cooking.

Baking is all about precision and making sure you have the right mix of ingredients at the right weight and temperature.  Even the world’s best bakers will tell you how important it is to use the right percent and measurements when baking a recipe.

Today, students in Grade 6, 7 and 8 honed their numeracy skills, while baking cupcakes as part of Archbishop Anthony Meagher Catholic Continuing Education Centre’s Cooking Camp. The students then participated in a lesson focused on cake decorating.

The camp is a fan favourite among students and parents. “Our Cooking Camps are full within a few days,” noted Stacey Ritchie, Vice Principal of Archbishop Anthony Meagher Catholic Continuing Education Centre. “Parents and students love learning numeracy skills such as fractions, measurement and conversion, while preparing snacks, lunch or dessert. We’re making Math fun and engaging for our students.”
